Lekythos Shape

The vases in our collection follow the classic Lekythos shape, which first appeared in Athens in the 12th century BC and was adopted by Etruscan potters between the 5th and 3rd centuries BC. This vase was primarily used to store scented oils and ointments. The unique shape of the Lekythos has allowed it to be reproduced in various materials like alabaster or marble, and it was used both domestically and by athletes in gymnasiums and funeral ceremonies.

Craftsmanship and Techniques

These vases are made of high-quality terracotta and are decorated with the extraordinary black-figure technique, typical of Etruscan ceramics from the 7th century BC. During kiln firing, the colors invert: black becomes red and red becomes black, revealing a fascinating color play. Each piece showcases the skill of our local artisan.
