Etruscan Vase Collection

Discover our refined Etruscan Vase Collection, where the ancient art of ceramics blends with modern functionality. Each handcrafted 300ml vase is the fruit of the craftsmanship of a fellow townsman and neighbour of ours, a skilled artisan who has been making these unique pieces for us for years, keeping the tradition of the region alive.

Lekythos Shape

The vases in our collection follow the classic Lèkythos shape, which first appeared in Athens as early as the 12th century BC and was adopted by Etruscan potters between the 5th and 3rd centuries BC. This vase was used above all to hold scented oils and ointments. The distinctive shape of the Lèkythos allowed it to be reproduced in various materials such as alabaster or marble, and the vase was used both in the home and by athletes in the gymnasium and in funeral ceremonies.

Craftsmanship and Techniques

These vases are made of high-quality terracotta and decorated with the extraordinary black-figure technique, typical of Etruscan ceramics of the 7th century BC. During firing in the kiln, the colours invert: black becomes red and red becomes black, revealing a fascinating interplay of hues. Each piece showcases the mastery of our local artisan.

Malaxation

In the malaxer, the olive paste is slowly and constantly stirred. The purpose is to encourage the tiny oil droplets to merge together, since otherwise they would remain scattered, making the next extraction step possible. This is where temperature and time make the difference: too little and the oil stays trapped, too long or too hot and you risk losing precious aromas and polyphenols.

Master oil millers know that every olive variety "responds" differently: some need just a few minutes, others more, and even humidity or ripeness affect the result. It's a delicate balance, built on experience and sensitivity, that yields an oil rich in aroma and health benefits.

Separator

After malaxation, the olive paste moves to the centrifugal separator, where the oil is separated from the vegetation water and pomace. It's a fascinating step: from a dark, compact mass, the green-gold stream of new oil is finally born.

Decanting

Next comes natural decanting, a resting period that lets the oil clarify on its own. Here the experience of master oil millers counts more than machines: they know oil left to decant too long risks losing freshness, while oil bottled too soon can turn out cloudy.

Bottling

After decanting, the oil is transferred into dark bottles that protect it from light and preserve its aromas. It's a moment of great care, because the freshness achieved in the mill must remain intact until it reaches the table.

Storage and freshness

Do

  • Store in a cool, dark pantry, away from the stove
  • Reseal the cap tightly right after use
  • Prefer dark containers: dark glass, tin, or steel

Don't

  • Don't expose to direct light or heat sources
  • Don't store in the fridge: condensation and sediment alter its aroma
  • Don't leave the oil in open or clear jugs

When to use it

New oil is at its best in the first few months. Use the opened bottle consistently and follow the best-before date printed on each package.
